Description
Join Geshe Tenzin Losel for an appreciation of these verses, with discussion and meditation. Geshe Losel’s translation will be shared with attendees.
Nagarjuna, founder of the Middle Way approach to Buddhist wisdom, in his Root Middle Way Stanzas, sets forth the antidote to ignorance and suffering, opening the mind to emptiness - an unsurpassable realisation that nourishes, heals and brings relief. His verses are highly condensed, though often cryptic. Buddhapālita’s commentary has its challenges also but a radical insight shines through. Chapter 10, comprising sixteen verses, is not one of the chapters most often taught; it is chosen here for study by Geshe Tenzin Losel for the reason that more of the original Sanskrit of Buddhapālita’s commentary remains for this chapter.
“There is no fire reliant on fuel,
Nor fire that’s not reliant on fuel.
There is no fuel reliant on fire
Nor fuel that’s not reliant on fire.”
In these teachings, production from self or other, are examined and rejected. Other ways in which fire and fuel could be related are taken up and Nagarjuna’s analysis obliges us to seriously consider the far-reaching implications of fire and fuel being mutually dependent.
